President Trump's chances

Monday, December 17, 2018

Suddenly everybody seems to be abuzz about the "I" word. But not so fast.

Assuming every Democrat and independent votes to convict in a Senate trial, Trump would only need 34 Republican senators to vote to acquit. He could lose 19 Republicans and survive. I think that would be a very reachable goal given Trump's continued popularity among rank and file Republicans.

The number one priority for most of them always is getting reelected. What they really would want to avoid is getting primaried in the next election, which could certainly happen if they vote to convict. Then there is the possibility that one or two Red State Democrats might also vote to acquit, which would put Trump in an even better situation.

But having said that, if he survives by only one or two votes that would most likely paralyze the rest of his presidency and doom his reelection chances. And unless he gets a pardon he could be looking at jail time after leaving office in 2021. But we shall see. Nobody knows for sure how this will play out.
